Opulence + Austerity

Opulence + Austerity is an approach to mitigate a rigorous program (Incinerator) presence on the Venetian lagoon. Venice is susceptible to flooding, where buildings have been elevated off the water where possible. Therefore, 3 conditions exist in this building where the roof and the incinerator are static and Istituto delle Scienze Marine (ISMAR) mass is a dynamic pontoon foundation. The building also celebrates the Venetian water-scape and architecture where it becomes an adaptable artificial landscape that floats. The idea of the opelence was derived from the formal language of the city, while the incinerator's spartan efficiency made it oppose the city's deeply rooted vernacular architecture.
